Windows XP (as well as subsequent versions of the operating system) uses a registry system to manage processes, drivers and peripherals that your computer frequently accesses. If you have a lot of outdated peripherals, uninstalled content, or have just noticed a gradual slowdown in your computer's overall maintenance, cleaning up and fixing your registry only takes a few minutes.

- Open the "Run" dialog box from the "Start" menu. A window will appear with a dialog box.
- Type "regedit" into the text box, and then press Enter. A screen will pop up with a list of registry entrants arranged by category in a "tree" format. Click on all of the categories to expand all the trees and display all of the registry entries.
- Identify all registry entrants associated with uninstalled programs, unused peripherals and unauthorized software. Highlight them with your mouse (hold the Shift key to highlight multiple entries) and then press the Delete button to delete the entries.
- Close the registry tool and then restart the computer. You should notice an immediate improvement in your computer's performance.
